PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots pulled off another nail-biter, taking down the Oregon State Beavers 53-50 in a rematch of last season's WCC Tournament title game. The win puts Portland at 14-10 overall and 8-4 in WCC play.
Florence Dallow led the way with a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds. It's the second game in a row where she's reached both those totals. Dyani Ananiev was the lone other double-digit scorer with 12 points and five rebounds.
Portland turned the ball over just six times, a season-low, while adding 15 assists. They shot just 33.9% overall but made six 3-pointers in the second half on their way to a win. They held the Beavers to just 23.1% shooting from outside and forced 15 turnovers.
How it Happened
The first quarter was a defensive battle, with both teams stifling the other. Neither team shot above 40% for the quarter. Portland put together a 7-0 run that gave them the biggest lead of the quarter at four points. The Pilots and Beavers traded leads twice more, with a late layup from Lainey Spear tying things up at 11 to end the quarter.
Offensively, both teams continued to struggle in the second quarter. Oregon State scored with 8:14 to go in the quarter and neither team scored again until 4:40 left in the period. Portland scored just five points in the quarter and the Beavers put together a 9-2 run that put the Pilots down six at the half. Oregon State led 22-16 through the first 20 minutes.
The third quarter began and the Beavers managed to maintain a slim margin throughout the penultimate period, never pushing it past six points. The Pilots hit four 3-pointers in the quarter to start putting something together from outside. Portland still trailed through three quarters 36-34.
The fourth quarter was just as tight as the third, with both teams trading runs to keep it close. OSU got their lead to five points before Ananiev and Dallow put together a 7-0 themselves to retake the lead. Kennedie Shuler tied things with a late and-one, but Dallow put it away with a 3-pointer with a minute to play. Shuler missed two free throws late and Oregon State couldn't hit the final 3-pointer with a second to play, with the Pilots winning 53-50.
