PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots ended the regular season with an absolute thriller, taking down the Gonzaga Bulldogs in overtime at home 92-91 for their first regular season win over the Zags since 2009 and their first at the Chiles Center since 2001. How it Happened
Portland came out hot, hitting a quick 3-pointer and a fastbreak layup to jumpstart the action. After two quick Gonzaga baskets, Portland put together a 6-0 run to go up seven. But the Zags were able to respond with an 8-0 run themselves. The Pilots and Bulldogs traded baskets the rest of the quarter, with Portland's late 7-0 run giving them a two-point lead.
The second quarter saw the Pilots take over. They forced eight turnovers and added four steals, stifling the Zags on their way to an 11-2 run over a long stretch of the second. Gonzaga ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to make it just a four-point lead for the Pilots at the half 33-29.
Gonzaga scored 29 points in the third quarter to put the pressure back on the Pilots. The Zags made eight free throws in the quarter and worked their way into the paint, with Lauren Whittaker and Zeryhia Aokuso dictating the action for them. But the Pilots didn't let the lead extend by much, keeping it at 60-55 Gonzaga.
After being held scoreless the entirety of the game, Dallow took over in the fourth. After the Zags pushed their lead to nine points, Dallow hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game back up at 66 points a piece. Aokuso and Whittaker continued to work their way to the line, but the Pilots never faltered. After two Whittaker free throws put the Zags up three with just over eight seconds to play, the Pilots pushed it down court, with Dallow trailing behind for the shot. Dallow shot, and Dallow delivered, hitting the 3-pointer to take it into overtime.
Anderson hit the first two shots of the quarter, a pair of 3-pointers that made it a six-point game. The Pilots never trailed in the overtime period after that first Anderson 3-pointer with 4:28 on the clock remaining. Whittaker's last-second 3-pointer was too little too late, with the Pilots taking down the Zags 92-91 in OT.
