PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots earned their first sweep of the season with an 11-3 win on Sunday over the Holy Cross Crusaders. The win puts the Pilots at 8-6 on the year.
Freshman Dakota Chun was stellar at the plate, recording four hits in five at-bats and driving in two runs with a double. Chun is the second Pilot this season to record at least four hits in a game. Cody Nitowitz and Brooks Avery were the other two Pilots to record multiple hits today, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 respectively. Brady Bean and Cole Katayama-Stall both drove in three RBI's, with Katayama-Stall's runs coming on a pinch hit.
On the mound, Will Labonte earned his first official win as a Pilot. Labonte went five innings with just one run allowed, the first he's conceded all season. He struck out four batters as well. Four Pilots made appearances in relief, with Ky Hoskinson, Kaden Segel, Grady Keljo and Alexander Via all throwing for Portland.
How it Happened
The Crusaders started the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first. Portland scored the next eight runs from there, starting with two in the third. Chun's two-run double helped put Portland on top 2-1 in the bottom of the third.
A big inning for the Pilots followed, with Portland scoring six runs in the fifth. Bean's ground out brought home a run followed by Nolan Miller's RBI single. Gage Bruce took a walk to bring home Chun, then Katayama-Stall came in for the clutch pinch hit, bringing home three with a double. Portland led 8-1 through five innings.
Holy Cross took advantage of an error to score two runs in the sixth, but Portland earned those runs back quickly. Jonas Salk hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth, then Bean brough home two with a single to put the score at its 11-3 final.
