SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In their first game to go extra innings this season, the Portland Pilots eked out a win to avoid the sweep and defeat the Santa Clara Broncos 3-1 on the road. Portland improves to 23-18 overall and 9-9 in WCC play.
Brady Bean hit a team-best 3-for-4 with an RBI on the day, recording the most hits by any Pilot in a game this series. Cody Nitowitz and Trey Swygart both recorded multiple hits on the day, with both players going 2-for-5 while Swygart added two doubles and an RBI. Swygart was the only Pilot to record a hit in every game this series. Joe Fagan made his Pilot debut at the plate as well, going 1-for-5 to record his first collegiate hit. Jonas Salk had an RBI on a sacrifice fly as well.
Kaden Segel had a solid start for the Pilots, going 5.1 innings with no runs and just two hits allowed along with three strikeouts. Alex Via, who pitched a career-high 4.2 innings and officially earned the win, struck out four batters as well while conceding one unearned run. The win is the first official victory of Via's career.
How it Happened
The Pilots drove in a run in the fifth inning to start the scoring. Swygart brough home Fagan on an RBI double to make it 1-0 Portland. That lead held up until the eighth, when a crucial error and a jammed pop-up to center field allowed the Broncos to score and tie things up at one. That score took the game to extra innings
In the 10
th inning, Portland reclaimed the lead, scoring on a sac fly and a sac bunt from Jonas Salk and Bean respectively to make it 3-1 Pilots. Via and company shut the Broncos down on defense to claim the win and avoid the sweep.
Game Notes
- Bean went a team-best 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. His three hits were the most by any Pilot in a game this series.
- Nitowitz and Swygart went 2-for-5 each, with Swygart's double driving home a run.
- Swygart earned a hit in every game this series. He was the only Pilot to do so.
- Salk's sac fly in the 10th was the 108th of his career, moving him into sole possession of 14th all-time for Portland in RBI's.
- Segel was stellar in the start, going 5.1 innings with no runs and just two hits allowed. He struck out three batters as well.
- Via's 4.2 innings pitched were a career high. He allowed a run and two hits while striking out four batters for the win.
- The win is the first official victory of Via's season and career.
- Fagan made his Pilot and collegiate debut, batting 1-for-5 to earn his first collegiate hit as well.
- This was the first extra innings game for the Pilots this season.
