PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots took the opener against the San Diego Toreros 9-6 thanks to a grand slam and a homer. The win puts Portland at 24-18 overall and 10-9 in WCC play.
Trey Swygart earned the win on the mound and was also stellar at the plate. He went six innings and had four runs count against him with two strikeouts, and at the plate went 2-for-4 with a grand slam to drive in four runs. Swygart's win is his fifth, good for the most on the Pilots. His home run was his fourth of the year. Morgan Codron and Alex Via both made appearances on the mound as well, with both allowing a run each.
Dakota Chun and Leo Cote were both 2-for-4, with Chun driving in one run and Cote two. Cote hit the fifth home run of the season and of his career as well. Joe Fagan was 1-for-4 in his second career start, driving home his first career RBI.
How it Happened
The Pilots scored big early, driving in six runs in the second inning. Cote and Fagan both had RBI singles before Swygart's grand slam made it 6-0 Pilots quickly.
San Diego got on the board in the fourth, but the Pilots quickly make up the run with two of their own. Cote hit his solo home run and Katayama-Stall had a double down the line to put two runs on the board and make it 8-1 Pilots.
The Toreros put a dent in the Pilots' lead in the seventh inning with three runs, but the Pilots didn't let that deter them, with Portland adding a run on a double from Chun that stayed just fair and went right over the first baseman's head. San Diego scored two runs in the ninth to make it 9-6, but the Pilots still cruised to victory.
