PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots dropped Game 2 of their series against the San Diego Toreros, losing 8-4 after allowing seven runs in across the seventh and eighth innings. The Pilots fall to 24-19 on the year and 10-10 in WCC play.
Despite the loss, Will Labonte was stellar in his start, going six innings with just one run and six hits allowed along with six strikeouts. It's the fifth time in his last six starts he's gone at least six innings and also his fifth time in six starts throwing at least five strikeouts. Aaron Louis officially took the loss after allowing three runs in the seventh inning and Ky Hoskinson and Grady Keljo both made appearances for an inning.
Offensively, Leo Cote was stellar, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI's. Cote's homer was the sixth of his career and season and also his second of the series. Nolan Miller was the only other batter to record multiple hits, batting 2-for-4, and Trey Swygart hit his second home run of the series and fifth of the year with a solo bomb. Brady Bean had an RBI single as well.
How it Happened
Bean started the scoring for Portland with his RBI single in the first inning. San Diego responded in the fifth with an RBI single themselves, then they added three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead.
The Pilots cut into that lead, with Cote bringing home two runs with a moonshot over the scoreboard in right field, his sixth of the season. The Toreros, however, responded in a big way with four runs of their own in the seventh inning, making it 8-3 San Diego. The Pilots got a solo homer from Swygart in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't make up the gap from there, losing 8-4.
