After a two win performance on our opening weekend against Portland State and on the road against Cal State Northridge, this week has been one of recovery, team bonding, and hard work in preparation for this weekend’s games.
Monday, usually a recovery day for our team, was a travel day home from Los Angeles involving a flight delay and a longer voyage than expected. However, the travel-induced fatigue was quickly alleviated by the most anticipated event of the summer – Bill Irwin’s world-famous annual barbecue! Every year, Bill and his family are gracious enough to have the men’s and women’s teams and staff over to their beautiful house for a feast fit for a king. It is a great opportunity for everyone to relax, bond, and test the capacity of their stomachs.
The highlights of this year’s barbecue were the performances by Dees (Erin Dees) and Dre (Kendra Chandhoke). Throwing their inhibitions to the wind, both courageously were willing to showcase their unique talents for the entertainment of the awestruck audience. Dre, aka Sasha Fierce (Beyonce’s alter ego), performed her rendition of the national anthem that is impossible to describe. It is one of the few things that has me at a loss for words. After arduously attempting to accurately explain Dre’s particular version of the classic, I instead post it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPGUX9s7lRk for your viewing pleasure.
Following her act was Dees, with a talent fitting for the most diabolical of haunted houses. She took a deep breath, and let forth with a deep evil laugh that sounded straight from a horror movie. Her eyes seemed to pop out of her head as we in the audience did not know whether to laugh or shudder. Needless to say, their performances were proof that our the talent on our team is not restricted to the soccer field.
The next day was our fitness day, where Dr. Terry Favero took us through a tough running session that pushed us to our limits and showed our team what we are capable of. After pushing ourselves and each other through a trying workout in the blazing afternoon heat, we know together there is nothing that we cannot accomplish.
We host Southern Methodist on Friday at 7 and Oklahoma State on Sunday at noon. As classes start on Monday, the majority of the student body is on campus and we are hoping for a much larger and rowdier crowd this weekend, with more body paint than ever. Please come and support us; we are so grateful for every one of you all. Go Pilots!
