Keeping in mind the progression of student-athletes through college, as they begin at UP and determine a major to their final semester as they close in on their career aspirations, programming is tailored for each step to increase their marketability and readiness for the workplace.
Â
INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING
Jumping into the professional setting isn’t something your born knowing. Partnering with the University of Portland Career Center, we welcome a career counselor to share tips for students as they prepare for job fairs, informational interviews, and communicate with potential employers.
Â
NETWORKING NIGHT
Prior to a home competition, student-athletes talk with local UP alums from a full array of career fields about their jobs, career paths, and how their time as a student-athlete at UP factored into it all.
Â
ETIQUETTE DINNER
In collaboration with the Pamplin School of Business, each year we welcome a professional etiquette consultant to campus. All sophomore student-athletes enjoy a four-course meal as they review table etiquette, networking, and the importance of how one carries them self through life.
Â
LOCAL CAREER NETWORKING
Whether the opportunity presents itself on campus or in the local community, the athletic department coordinates and supports student-athlete attendance at events.
Examples from previous years:
- First Avenue Career & Graduate School Expo
- Women in Sports Career Seminar
- Trail Blazers Sports and Entertainment Career and Internship Fair
Â
JOB SEARCH 101
Even before the resume, cover letter, and interview you must find the job to apply to. This program looks at the complete process from looking for opportunities, to applying, interviewing, and showing up to work on day 1. Students leave this session with the necessary skills to successfully navigate landing a job.
Â
TRANSFERABLE SKILL IDENTIFICATION
Through guided individual reflection and group discussions, students identify the strengths they have as individuals and the skills they’ve developed as student-athletes that make them strong job candidates.
Â
SENIOR RESUME PROJECT
Through workshops tailored to student-athletes and one-on-one meetings, we work to support every senior in creating a strong, professional resume prior to graduating from the University.
Â
CAREER CENTER
Much of our programming is designed and facilitated in collaboration with the incredible staff in the University of Portland’s Career Center. Check out all the center has to offer:
