UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND: Hired as the 21st head coach in University of Portland baseball history on Feb. 1, 1998, Sperry enters his eighth season … replaced his college coach Terry Pollreisz, who resigned after 11 years to become manager of the Everett AquaSox, the Seattle Mariners' class A team in the Northwest League … he is a member of the Lefty Gomez committee of the ABCA, which annually gives an award for outstanding achievement in college baseball … ranks third all-time at Portland in total wins (122), after seven seasons … in 2003, coached two players (Kory Casto and Brock Griffin) who signed with Major League teams … Casto was named to the 2003 all-WCC second team … in 2002, led Portland to a second-place finish in the West Division of the West Coast Conference (16-14), and 24-30 overall record, losing seven games by two runs or less … in 1999, the Pilots also finished second in the West Division with a 16-14 WCC record … Portland was third in the overall WCC standings, and finished 23-28 overall, including 11 losses by two runs or less … Portland’s 23 wins in 1999 were an improvement of 13 wins over the 1998 season … other highlights in 1999: Pilots Cory Lunde and Brian Graham were named to the 11-player WCC all-Academic team, three players earned four WCC Player of the Week honors, and five players were named to the all-conference team … first recruiting class included three players selected in the '96 Major League draft … currently five former players are in the professional ranks (Kory Casto, Travis Hanson, Eric Hull, Steve Chamberlain and Steve Jackson).
