Former Portland standout midfielder Steven Evans returned to The Bluff as a volunteer assistant coach during the summer of 2016.
Evans spent three years (2010-12) on the pitch with the Pilots before embarking on a professional career. As a junior, Evans was named to the All-West Coast Conference First Team for the second consecutive season. He finished second in the conference in goals (14) and points (31), while ranking eighth and 16th in those two categories nationally. Evans also had three assists that season and a team-high three game-winners, and he became the first UP men’s soccer player to register a hat trick in nine years.
Previously Evans was named the league’s freshman of the year in 2010, landed on the WCC’s all-freshman team, garnered conference second-team accolades and was named a Freshman All-American. In 53 career games for the Pilots, Evans totaled 24 goals, 12 assists and six game-winners.
Following his junior year at Portland, Evans signed professionally with the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer as the club’s second Homegrown Player. Evans played professionally for three years and won a USL national title before deciding to retire.
A Portland native Evans began his soccer career at Eastside United FC, for which he won the U.S. Youth Soccer U-18 national championship with in 2010. He also was an all-state player for Portland's Central Catholic High School where he helped guide the Rams to a 2007 6A State Championship.
During the summer months, Evans played for the Portland Timbers U23s in the USL Premier Development League, beginning in 2009. While with the Timbers U23s, Evans assisted on the game-winning goal in the final match of the 2010 PDL season against the Thunder Bay Chill as the Timbers won the championship match that season 4–1 in an undefeated season for the under-23s.
