UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND 2010: Started 16 games, while appearing in all 19 … two goals, three assists and seven points, which was fourth on the team … 19 shots, six on-goal … one game-winner, which came during 2-0 win at Gonzaga on Sept. 29 … assisted on game-winner during 2-1 win over No. 30 Evansville on Sept. 5 … also picked up the assist during 1-0 at San Diego on Oct. 8.
UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND 2009: Earned All-WCC Honorable Mention … made 16 starts and 18 appearances in the midfield … tied for second on the team with two game-winners and was fourth on the team with nine points … scored three goals and had three assists … first game-winner came during 2-1 win at Washington on Sept. 17 … notched second game-winner during 2-1 win over No. 17 Creighton on Sept. 27; also picked up an assist against the Blue Jays.
UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND 2008: Appeared in all 20 games and made 10 starts in the midfield … tallied one goal and one assist for three points … both his goal and his assist came during a 2-1 win at Gonzaga on Oct. 24 … his goal against the Bulldogs came in the 58th minute and gave UP a 1-0 lead … he then assisted on Patrick Jurney’s game-winner in the 88th minute.
BRIGHTON HS: Four-year letterwinner for coach Russell Boyer … earned all-state honors as a senior in 2007 and was named second team all-state in 2006 … helped lead the Bengals to three straight region championships (2005, 2006, 2007) and led the team in scoring during his senior season … the Bengals reached the state finals in 2006, the semifinals in 2005 and the quarterfinals in 2007 … recorded a hat trick during his junior season … also led the team in assists and finished second in scoring as a junior in 2006 … a team captain in both 2007 and 2008, he was voted team MVP as a junior.
CLUB TEAM: reached the state cup finals with Inter FC in 2003 and the Utah Rush in 2007 … also played with the Real Salt Lake (MLS) Youth League in 2007 … joined UP teammates Steven Evans, Richy Carrillo and Ryan Luke on the Portland Timber’s U-23 squad, which went a perfect 20-0-0 and won the PDL title.
PERSONAL: Born on May 2, 1990 in Utah … parents are Kathleen and Steven Nielson … major is organizational communications … father played baseball for the University of Utah … uncle Kenny Nielson played baseball at BYU.
