Jack Mullaney is in his 6th year as the Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for both the Pilots men’s and women’s cross country teams. During his time on the Bluff, Mullaney has helped the Portland men claim two podium finishes and the Portland women post their best ever finish in program history.
In 2017, the men’s team placed 2nd in the Nation at the NCAA Championships and had three Pilots earn All-American honors, the most in Portland’s history. The men went on to repeat history in 2018, again recording a podium finish, this time placing third. The Pilots had a streak of three straight West Region titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019, including individual titles in 2017 and 2018. They have qualified for the NCAA Championships in every season since Mullaney joined the staff, finishing no worse than 21st during that stretch.
2018 marked the most successful season in program history for the women, who earned their second ever at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. Entering the meet ranked No. 23 in the nation, Portland finished 12th overall and produced two All-American performances. They followed it up with another NCAA Championship appearance in the 2020 season, finishing 22nd. That season was highlighted by Anna Pataki’s WCC Individual title and All-American Honors.
As recruiting coordinator, Mullaney has played a vital role in signing some of the best American and international prospects hailing from 16 different states and 15 different countries. He has helped guide student-athletes to 20 All-American Honors (10 XC, 3 ITF, 7 OTF), two WCC Cross Country Individual Championships, and two NCAA Cross Country West Region Individual Championships.
In addition to his responsibilities at UP, Mullaney has also coached two alums, Emmanuel Roudolff-Lévisse and Matt Welch, in the marathon. Roudolff-Lévisse hit the Olympic A Standard at The Marathon Project in 2020, running 2:11:20, while Welch qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials by running 2:17:44 at the Twin Cities Marathon in 2019.
Prior to the start of the 2017 cross country season on the Bluff, Jack Mullaney was the Director of Operations for Utah State’s track and field and cross country programs. His responsibilities included handling administrative and logistical duties for the team, travel planning, expense reconciliation and home meet management, including the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Mountain Regional and 2017 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Before Utah State, Mullaney was the operations assistant for the University of Minnesota’s track & field and cross-country programs during the 2015-16 season. During his undergraduate years, he was as a student worker for Gopher Athletics, splitting time between the business office and human resources department.
A native of Eagan, Minn., Mullaney graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor’s of Science in Finance in 2014. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach (CSCS) by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), a USATF Level 2 Coach, and earned a Master’s of Science in Sport Management from West Virginia University in 2021.
