Susie Campbell enters her 27th season at the helm of the University of Portland women’s tennis team. She has instilled a winning tradition on The Bluff since her arrival in the 1993-94 season. A two-time West Coast Conference Coach of the Year, Campbell is the winningest women’s tennis coach in school history.
Campbell guided the Pilots to a banner season in 2015 with a 17-6 overall, 7-2 mark in WCC play (tied for second), and advancing to the WCC Championships title match for the first time in program history. The breakout season also included the Pilots earning an ITA National Ranking for the first time with high of No. 48 and finishing the season ranked No. 63. Portland also defeated Oregon for the first time, knocked off a top 50 opponent (No. 33 Saint Mary’s), and had two players individually ranked throughout the spring.
Lucia Butkovska was nationally ranked for a majority of that spring season and earned the first of two All-WCC First Team honors after posting an 18-2 dual record. Maja Mladenovic also was ranked nationally with a 15-5 dual spring record and was a three-time All-WCC selection.
Campbell has had nationally-ranked singles players six times. Butkovska just missed the NCAA Championships in 2015 with a season-high ranking of No. 60 and was ranked as high as No. 68 in 2016. Courtney Perkins was the first Pilot to be ranked in the ITA Top 100, garnering national rankings in 2000 and 2002.
Perkins was a First Team All-WCC selection in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Mladenovic (2014) and Butkovska (2015, 2016) also earned first team honors for the Pilots.
Lacey Plfibsen earned All-WCC Second Team honors each of her three years on The Bluff, as well as All-WCC doubles honors each year. Campbell coached Megan Sporndli to three All-WCC singles honors (second team in 2008 and 2010, honorable mention in 2009) and three All-WCC doubles awards, including first team in 2010.
A point of emphasis on The Bluff for Campbell is academic excellence from her squad. She has coached one WCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year (Andrea Swick, 1993), and 18 WCC All-Academic honorees, including three last spring. Women’s tennis also has consistently posted among the highest team GPA at UP throughout Campbell’s tenure.
As a player, Campbell was ranked the Pacific Northwest’s No. 1 open singles and doubles player, competed in USTA 10,000's and was named the 1994 Pacific Northwest Women’s Open Player of the Year. She was a finalist in the $15,000 Nike Open Championships in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Campbell has also competed in Europe on two occasions in 1986 and 1989.
Campbell graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1989 with a business degree. She was a two-year letterwinner in tennis and earned one letter in softball for the Sooners. She was a member of the 1988 Big-8 Conference doubles championship team and received the Big-8 Sportsmanship Award in 1989.
Campbell reached the NCAA quarterfinals and was an NCAA All-American in 1988. She began her tennis career at Cal State Northridge in 1984 and earned All-America honors there before transferring to Oklahoma.
Originally from Woodland Hills, Calif., Campbell was a four-time All-CIF state selection out of Louisville High School. She was the top-ranked singles and doubles player in the CIF southern California area as a senior.
Campbell began her coaching career at the high school level. She coached at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis, Ore. and led her team to three straight district championships (1991-93). She was also a staff instructor at Oregon State University from 1991-93 and was the head pro and manager of the Tennis West Racquet Club during that time.
Campbell is a former assistant tennis professional at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland and has coached Northwest junior teams at the USTA national events from 1996-98.
In 2012, she completed her Masters in Leadership through UP's School of Education.
Campbell has two daughters, Jasmine (20) and Mackenzie (16), and a son, Gavin (12).
