Michael King was named associate head coach in December of 2010 following three seasons as an assistant head coach for the Pilots. King was originally hired by the University of Portland in March of 2008 and has previously worked with UP head coach Joe Houck at Concordia University, serving as the first assistant coach from 2000-01.
King followed his stint at Concordia, where he and coach Houck led the Cavaliers to a regional title and a fifth-place finish in the nation, with a two-year stay at Alabama-Birmingham. He served as the Blazers’ top assistant before moving on to Eastern Washington for the second time in 2002. During his first stint as the first assistant at EWU in 1998-99, King helped the Eagles advance to the NCAA Tournament.
King, who hails from Atlanta, Georgia, and went to high school in Tigard, Ore., returned to the Portland area in 2003 and was head coach at Southridge High School. In his one year with the Skyhawks, King led the team to its first ever state playoff appearance. He then moved on to serve three-plus years (2004-08) as head coach at David Douglas High School, where he helped the Scots reach the state playoffs.
An instructor at more than 200 camps, King has led several club teams to regional and national success.
As a collegiate player, King played on the club teams at Pacific University (1993) and Oregon State (1996-97) and was the starting setter at Santa Barbara City College in 1994-95.
King and his wife Erin reside in Tigard. While at Ohio State, Erin was a four-time national champion in synchronized swimming. She has served as the head coach of the Puerto Rico National synchronized swimming team and recently won two Gold Medals a the World Master Games.
