PORTLAND, OR Portland sophomore forward Tami Standish hit the game-winning jump shot with two seconds remaining in the game and scored a career-high 24 points to lift the Pilots to a, 64-62, victory over arch-rival Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference match-up on Saturday night in front of a season-best 2,077 fans at the Chiles Center.
Portland improved to 8-13 overall and snapped a season-long six-game losing streak. The Pilots also earned their first West Coast Conference victory of the season and improved to 1-5 in the WCC. Gonzaga fell to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in league play.
Standish led three players in double figures for the Pilots and also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the process to go with six assists. Junior forward Sharon Rissmiller netted 15 points on the night and junior guard Trish Felts had 10 points and five rebounds.
Gonzaga was led by Carmel Lampson, who hit 4-of-10 from three-point range and led all Bulldogs with 16 points. Melanie Tipps was also in double figures for Gonzaga, scoring 11 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
The Bulldogs led by four points at, 60-56, with 2:22 remaining in the game when a lay-up by the Pilots Heather Reeder and two free throws by Standish brought Portland even at, 60-60, with 1:03 left in the game.
Gonzagas Kristin Deal brought the Bulldogs right back with a lay-up of her own to put the Bulldogs back up by two. After a missed three-pointer by Lampson, Portland called two straight timeouts and a missed jumper by Rissmiller and an offensive rebound by Standish with :04 remaining gave the Pilots the ball as Gonzaga immediately called a timeout to set up the last-second heroics.
Out of the break, Standish took the ball from Rissmiller and dribbled inside and hit an eight-foot jumper to give the Pilots the victory.
Portland next faces Loyola Marymount on the road on Friday (Feb. 6) at Gersten Pavillion in Los Angeles, CA. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
