PORTLAND -- Members of the University of Portland mens and womens soccer teams have received various honors in recent weeks, including prestigious national team call-ups and all-star game invitations.
Portland seniors Kylee Barton, Cheryl Loveless and Vanessa Talbott were selected to participate in the Umbro Select All-Star games Feb. 1-4 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Barton and Talbott will compete for the West team, while Loveless is on the Central roster.
CollegeSoccer.com also bestowed all-American honors on sophomore defender Lauren Orlandos (first team), sophomore midfielder Erin Misaki (third team), and senior forward Vanessa Talbott (honorable mention).
Orlandos has also been added to the United States womens national team roster for its upcoming trip to China. The U.S. will face China Jan. 11th in Pangyu, and Hangzhou on Jan. 14. She joins former Pilots Tiffeny Milbrett and Michelle French on the trip.
Portland sophomores Kelly Gray (forward) and Curtis Spiteri (keeper), were called into the U.S. mens U-20 camp through Jan. 15 in San Diego. After originally calling in 21 players, head coach Wolfgang Suhnholz has added three players and lost one, bringing the final camp roster number to 23. The camp marks the teams first substantial preparation for a run at qualifying for the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship in Argentina (June 17-July 7). While training at ARCO, the team has a number of scrimmages tentatively scheduled, including a Jan. 5 match against the L.A. Galaxy (at Loyola Marymount University) and a Jan. 7 contest against D.C. United (in Fullerton), two MLS teams in the area preparing for the FC Champions Cup. The team will also scrimmage against the A-League San Diego Flash on Jan. 14 at ARCO.
