Portland senior pitcher Steve Chamberlain was named the 2002 West Coast Conference all-league baseball team Friday, just the second Pilot ever to earn first-team all-WCC status.
Senior standouts Eric Hull (RP) and Cory Lunde (3B) were second team picks, while Travis Hanson (SS), Matt Allen (OF), Trevor Hahn (OF) and Kory Casto (OF) were honorable mention picks.
Gonzaga’s Nate Gold was WCC Player of the Year, while San Diego pitcher Ricky Barrett was Pitcher of the Year. Loyola Marymount’s Sean Smith was the WCC Freshman of the Year, and San Diego head coach Rich Hill was Coach of the Year.
Chamberlain was 8-2 overall for Portland - 7-2 in WCC games - and had 63 strikeouts and a 4.05 earned run average. Chamberlain joined Lunde (2000) as Portland’s only first-team all-WCC selections since the Pilots joined the league in 1996.
Hull repeated as a second-team all-WCC pick after leading the WCC with eight saves - six in conference play. Hull finished the year 2-3 with a 3.64 ERA, striking out 61 batters in 59.1 innings. Lunde earned his third all-WCC honor after hitting .366 in league play, .308 overall.
Hanson, Allen, Hahn and Casto received their first all-WCC honors as honorable mention picks. Hanson hit .315 overall and .320 in WCC games, driving in 29 runs with 12 doubles, two triples and five homers. Allen led Portland with a .374 WCC batting average, including 12 doubles, one triple, eight homers, 30 RBI and 33 runs scored. Allen hit .337 overall with 39 RBI, five triples and nine homers.
Hahn set a school record with his 27-game hitting streak, finishing with a .349 WCC batting average, .317 overall. Hahn scored 18 runs in WCC games, with eight doubles. Casto hit .322 in both the WCC season and overall, leading the team with 10 homers and 46 RBI.
Portland’s seven-player all-WCC team is a program high, beating the 1997 team’s total of four all-league players.
