LOS ANGELES, Calif.- Former University of Portland all-American Travis Parrott teamed with Jan-Michael Gambill to claim the Mercedes-Benz Cup doubles title on Sun., Aug. 3 at Strauss Stadium. Parrott/Gambill defeated Joshua Eagle and Sjeng Schalken 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in the finals.
The title is Parrott’s first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour championship and jumped his ATP Doubles Individual ranking 64 spots to No. 123 in the world.
A wild card entry, the duo won their first two rounds in straight sets, defeating top-seeded Rick Leach/Brian MacPhie 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. After taking out Scott Humphries/Mark Merklein 6-2, 6-7(3), 7-6(2), Parrott/Gambill ousted Eagle/Schalken for their first title together.
Parrott, the 2002 Portland Male Athlete of the Year, broke single-season records for wins in both singles (39) and doubles (30) for the Pilots in 2002.
