LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots were defeated by LMU on the road in conference play at the Gersten Pavilion with scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-19.
Portland’s record sits at 5-15/0-5 WCC (.250), while LMU improves to 11-7/1-3 WCC (.611).
The Pilots had two players in double digits in kills, with senior Ashley Grayson posting the match high with 19 kills and sophomore Jessica Clemens finishing with 11 kills. LMU responded with four players in double digits in the same category with senior Emily Day, redshirt sophomore Megan Nash and redshirt sophomore Becky Stehling connecting on 10 kills apiece and freshman Ariana Covington finishing with 11 kills.
Sophomore Danielle Dupar had the match high in digs with 12. Junior setter Kaylyn Jones finished with 35 assists, clipping close at the heels of LMU’s setter sophomore Renee Horton, who handed out a match high 36 assists. Horton also led both teams in blocks with four, including one block solo.
Early in the first set, the two teams held each other to within two points until LMU would creep ahead at 16-13, before making a push to close out the set in their favor.
The second set began with more of the same, except at 11-10 the Pilots would suffer a seven-point streak that brought LMU to a 16-11 advantage. Here the Pilots fought back, with a six-point streak of their own, to equalize at 18-18. The score would remain all knotted up until 21-21 when LMU would press on to seal the set.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair until 11-11 when LMU would dish out a six-point streak to leap ahead. The Lions would enjoy their largest lead of the set at 24-16 before finishing the match.
The Lions finished with a .404 hitting percentage to UP’s .278.
Portland continues WCC play on Saturday Oct. 18 against the 16th-ranked Pepperdine. The Pilots and Waves are set to go at 1:00 p.m. at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.
