PORTLAND, Ore. --- With 16 kills in the final home match of her career, senior Ashley Grayson became just the eighth player in Pilot history to reach the 1,000 kills mark as the Portland Pilots posted a four-set loss to Loyola Marymount on Saturday. The 23-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-22 match was preceded by a celebration of Portland’s four graduating seniors that included Grayson, K.C. Fox, Betsy Grasham and Jennifer Sheedy.
With one match left in conference play, Portland sits at 6-23 overall and 0-13 in the WCC, while LMU posts a 13-13 overall record and 3-9 in the WCC.
Grayson entered the match needing 10 kills to reach 1,000 and smashed home the milestone kill in the second set. She finished the match with a team leading 16 kills and also added 12 digs for the double-double.
All three seniors in Saturday’s lineup ended the match in double-digits in kills. Fox hit 12 kills and six digs, while Sheedy connected on 11 kills and two blocks.
Sophomore Jessica Clemens contributed 13 kills and eight digs. Freshman Marissa Plummer led the Pilots in blocks with five.
Danielle Dupar had the match high in digs with 13, while LMU’s Ariana Covington smashed home the match high in kills with 21. LMU’s Renee Horton had the match high in assists with 46, while Portland’s Kaylyn Jones dished out 45.
Portland led LMU in digs, assists and tied them for kills. But LMU forced the Pilots into 16 more hitting errors, out-hitting UP .348 to .206 and out-blocking UP 11.5 to seven.
