PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Pilots had a challenging morning falling 3-0 to the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday morning at the Portland State Showcase in the Stott Center. The Beavers defeated the Pilots with scores of 25-17, 25-16, 25-16.
The result gives Portland a record of 3-7, while OSU moves to 8-2.
Freshman Marissa Plummer and senior Jennifer Sheedy led the way for UP with nine kills apiece. Sophomore Jessica Clemens finished with nine digs and Kaylyn Jones had 20 assists. The match high in kills came from OSU junior Rachel Rourke with 14, while senior Ashley Evans had a match-high 13 digs.
After dropping the first set, Portland seemed to bounce back in the second, taking the early lead at 6-3. But OSU would respond by claiming an 8-7 advantage. The Pilots fought to keep the score tight with a service ace from freshman libero Allix Strahon, two kills from Plummer and one delivered by Jessica Clemens, but the Beavers were relentless, taking the set 25-16. In the third set, the Pilots looked for solutions to keep them in the game, but finished with an identical 25-16 margin.
The Pilots will have a little time to re-group before facing UC Riverside at 5 p.m. Saturday evening in their final game at the Portland State Showcase.
