Zivkovic/Schleining Make Finals as Pilots Open at BSU Fall Classic

BOISE, Idaho --- University of Portland men’s tennis players Filip Zivkovic and Evan Schleining combined to reach the doubles finals to highlight a triumphant trip at the Boise State Fall Classic last weekend. The Pilots opened the fall season with a 5-3 doubles record and a 15-10 singles mark.

The nine-team tournament field was comprised of 75 players representing the University of Idaho, Montana State, Whitman College, Lewis-Clark State College, University of Montana, Portland State, Idaho State, BYU and UP.
 
“The thing I was most happy about for the weekend was that everyone started out shaky and nervous on the first day and it showed in our results,” said UP head coach Aaron Gross. “But by the end of the weekend guys were doing a much better job of showing the improvement in their games that I know have occurred over the first five weeks of practice this fall.”
 
The duo of seniors Zivkovic and Schleining overcame four teams on their way to the doubles final which saw them lose 9-8 to Spencer Smith and Evan Urbina of Brigham Young.
 
"The highlight of the weekend was Filip (Zivkovic) and Evan (Schleining) reaching the finals of doubles,” said Gross. “They fell just short to a good team from BYU and played pretty well over the entire course of the tourney. They have picked right up where they left off last year.”
 
Meanwhile in the singles competition, Zivkovic won the consolation of the Blue Flight, while Schleining and freshman Jackson Martin made it to the Blue Flight quarterfinals.
 
Several players made their debut as Pilots including freshman Mike Pigou who made it through to the consolation finals falling 6-4, 6-4 to Pate Colton of Idaho State. In doubles, Pigou and sophomore Geoff Hernandez battled Alberto Fuenta and Fletcher Keyes of Montana State to an 8-5 loss.
 
Junior transfer Daniel Coehlo, representing UP for the first time, fended off Dakota Pate of Idaho State 7-6(5), 7-5 before falling to Evan Urbina of Brigham Young 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 16. Coelho also teamed up with junior Nick Wales in doubles action to defeat Matt Erickson and Mam Vetu of Portland State 8-4 then fell in the round of 16 to George Batrakov and Daniel Hwang of BYU also 8-4.
 
Freshman Jackson Martin played well for UP in doubles. Martin paired up with junior Bryan Thorp todefeat Benjamin Robert and Sammuel Tozer of Lewis & Clark by a score of 8-6. Later in the round of 16 they fell 8-4 to theNo. 5 seed Christian Hodel and Jeff Mullen of host Boise State.
 
“Daniel (Coelho) and Bryan (Thorp) had some nice singles wins,” said Gross. “Filip (Zivkovic) came back after a disappointing first round loss and won the consolation. Newcomers Jackson (Martin) and Mike (Pigou) showed some nice promise. And Geoff (Hernandez), Nick (Wales), and Evan (Schleining) have all come a long way since last spring."
 
The Pilots will next be in action at the ITA Regionals in Berkeley, Calif. on Oct. 22-26.
