PULLMAN, Wash. --- The University of Portland women’s tennis team opened the 2009-10 season at the 2009 Cougar Classic with a solid showing. The doubles tandem of Lacey Pfibsen and Megan Sporndli won the Crimson Doubles Draw, while junior Stefanie Doolittle reached the finals of the Gray Singles Draw.
Pflibsen and Sporndli defeated teams from Boise State, Gonzaga and Montana before beating WSU’s tandem of Liudmila Vasileva/Elisabeth Fournier in the title match, 9-7.
Doolittle came from a set down in the first round to knock off Gonzaga’s Britta Stime and then ran off straight set wins in her next three matches to reach the finals. She lost to Washington State’s Marina Nicholas in Sunday’s championship match.
Pflibsen also won her first round match in the Crimson Singles Draw in three sets over Montana State’s Laura Villegas.
Portland head coach Susie Campbell-Gross had all six of her women’s tennis players compete in the tournament, including freshman Valeska Hoath (Queensland, Australia).
The Pilots collectively posted a 6-4 doubles record and went 8-10 in singles action at the event. Complete Portland results from the tournament are listed below.
Portland will continue its fall season next month at the Saint Mary’s Invitational held in Moraga, Calif. on Oct. 16-18.
