PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- Portland men’s soccer standout Collen Warner was selected 15th overall by Real Salt Lake in the First Round of Major League Soccer’s SuperDraft, which was held on Thursday. Warner recently completed his UP career by helping guide the Pilots to the Third Round of the NCAA postseason.
Warner, a native of Denver, Colo., led Portland this year with nine goals, 25 points, three game-winners, 60 shots and 25 shots on-goal. He also led the West Coast Conference in points, was tied for first in game-winners, tied for second in goals and he ranked third with seven assists.
“A lot of teams were interested in me and I’m thrilled to be going to Real Salt Lake,” said Warner. “I’m just excited to follow in the line of the great UP soccer players who are currently playing in the MLS. Real Salt Lake has a lot of good players on the squad and I’m looking forward to playing there.”
Warner landed on the All-WCC First Team for the third consecutive year this fall. He concluded his UP career with 20 goals, 20 assists, 60 points and six game-winners in 79 games.
During Portland’s run through the 2009 playoffs, Warner scored both goals during a 2-1 overtime win at New Mexico and he assisted on the game-winner in a 2-1 win at North Carolina State. He also went three-for-three on penalty kicks this fall.
The expansion Philadelphia Union selected Oregon State’s Danny Mwanga with the first pick of the draft. Warner was the first player from the WCC taken and he’s scheduled to report to Real Salt Lake in February.
