PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots men’s tennis team continued its winning ways with decisive victories Friday and Saturday, topping Gonzaga 5-2 then Montana 6-1 at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The result marks the second perfect weekend in a row for the UP squad.
Portland improves to 5-3 on the season while Gonzaga now sits at 2-3 and Montana drops to 1-1.
“Our 5-3 overall record includes two 4-3 losses, with a little luck we could be 7-1 and probably nationally ranked,” said head coach Aaron Gross. “I hope being this close makes our guys hungry to really improve for the second half of the season. We have a little break now, so we will be able to address some doubles issues and improve on some individual needs."
Against Gonzaga, the Pilots won four of the six singles matches and two of three in the doubles competition.
"Gonzaga played really hard and well and we rose to the occasion where we needed to,” said Gross. “Zivkovic, Schleining, and Coelho played really well for us today. When we get everyone clicking on the same day we will be hard to beat. But right now we are still trying to find that consistency throughout the line-up.”
The Pilots dominated singles play against Montana claiming five of six matches, including a marathon battle by freshman Jackson Martin at the No. 6 position aginst Mike Facey. Martin dropped the first set with a narrow 6-7 margin. He then bounced back with a quick 6-0 second set victory before sealing the win at 10-8 in the third.
At doubles, Portland took two of three matches against Montana to claim the doubles point.
"We played a solid match today against Montana to end our first segment of the year,” said Gross. “We knew Montana would be a good test for us. They are a solid squad. Thorp was a standout for us, but everyone played well.”
Portland next faces Weber State on Friday, Mar. 5 then Seattle on Saturday, Mar. 6 at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
