SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots women’s tennis defeated Gonzaga 4-1 in the second day of the West Coast Conference Championships Saturday at the Barnes Tennis Center, securing a spot in the consolation final scheduled for Sunday.
The doubles duo of junior Stefanie Doolittle and freshman Valeska Hoath clinched the doubles point for the Pilots at the end of the wire 9-8(10). Senior Megan Sporndli and junior Lacey Pflibsen notched the other doubles win at the No. 1 spot.
Pflibsen, Doolittle and Hoath kept the momentum going into singles play all notching wins in two-straight-sets to send UP into the battle for fifth-place Sunday at 8 a.m. against San Francisco.
“It was a good day for the lady Pilots,” said head coach Susie Campbell-Gross. “I was very proud of our team today. They came out ready to compete from the first point and we were able to win the doubles point and carry that into singles play. Competing for fifth place in the conference has taken a lot of heart for a team that has had many challenges this season to overcome.”
