As we flew in to Minneapolis, Merel teased Maddie about how flat the Midwest was. This was ironic because 1. Merel is from the Netherlands (flat like a pancake) and 2. The course we were soon to race on was everything BUT flat.
As soon as we got the beastly rental van for the 10 of us, we drove to Whole Foods: the team’s favorite grocery store. Later, we went for a nice shake out jog near the U of M campus. The next day we ran/previewed the hilly course that wove through a golf course, finishing the relaxing day at an Asian Wok Restaurant. (Picture: Kellie and Tansey fill their bowl at the veggie bar)
Race Day. It was a large field of over 200 runners. It was also fairly warm. I keep waiting for the rainy fall season to hit; I am sure it will be here sooner than we think.
Gina and Kellie raced with the varsity for the first time this season. They both had awesome races—Gina leading the team and Kellie following right behind her. Laura had another solid race. Natasha also showed her fitness coming in fourth place for the team with a strong finish. Again we had some family support: Kellie’s family, Maddie’s family, Tansey’s relative, and Slaine’s parents.
After the race, Slaine’s family invited us over to their home for dinner. It was nice to have a home cooked meal. We watched a slide show of the pictures Slaine’s Dad took of the race and played with the family dog. It was a good way to end the trip.
On the last day, we went on a morning run along the Mississippi River and a quick shopping trip at the mall. Even though it was less than an hour at the mall, basically everyone managed to buy something! We are efficient shoppers!
Now it’s back to Portland to train for the conference!
