Pilots Top West Region, Finish 12th at NCAA Championships
Overall Results
LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- Redshirt-Sophomore Scott Fauble earned All-American honors to lead the Portland Pilots to the highest finish amongst West Coast teams at the NCAA Championships Saturday afternoon. With four underclassmen counting in the team scores, Portland finished 12th overall, ahead of regional foes UCLA, Stanford, and Oregon at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
"It was a good, solid performance highlight by a spectacular race by Scott Fauble," Portland head coach Rob Conner said following the race. "12th place is very satisfying. Woody Kincaid had a spectacular finish passing about 40 runners in the last 3k."
Fauble clocked a time of 29:50.8, a season-best and good for a 26th place finish. The sophomore from Golden, Colo., becomes the 11th Pilot to earn All-American honors in the program’s storied history.
Fellow sophomores Woody Kincaid (57th, 30:23.3) and David Perry (124th, 30:56.7) also contributed to the Pilots’ team score of 365, as did senior Lars Erik Malde (115th, 30:52.5) and true freshman Jacob Smith (149th, 31:06.0).
"Jacob Smith really came through for us as our fifth man," added Conner. "He did about what Woody did last year, so big things are in his future."
The Pilots finished ahead of UCLA (376) and Virginia (382), and just behind Princeton (358). Stanford, which ran away with the West Regionals last week in Seattle, finished in 16th with 408 points.
Charlie McDonald (31:54.7) and Jared Bassett (32:04.3) also competed for the Pilots.
Oklahoma State had four runners in the top 20 to capture the team title with 72 points. Wisconsin placed three runners in the top five scored runners, but had to settle for a second place finish.
The top four individual runners in the race had earned individual bids and were not counted towards the team results. Kennedy Kithuka of Texas Tech was the fastest runner on the day, clocking a 28:31.3 to finish ahead of Arizona’s speedy duo Stephen Sambu (28:38.6) and Lawi Lalang (28:51.8).
UTEP’s freshman Anthony Rotich finished fourth with a time of 29:13.5 before the runners representing teams began scoring.
