SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Senior pitchers Keeler Brynteson and Kyle Kraus and sophomore outfielder Chet Thompson were named the 2012 West Coast Conference Baseball All-Academic Team, which was announced on Friday. This is the third consecutive conference all-academic honor for Kraus, while Brynteson earned academic all-region accolades earlier this spring.
Brynteson is currently working towards is masters degree and boasts a GPA of 3.90. He is Portland’s all-time leader in career appearances with 97 and he has an ERA this season of 1.54. The native of Anacortes, Wash., is holding opposing hitters to a .250 average and he has 18 strikeouts in 23.1 innings and 23 appearances.
Kraus became UP’s all-time winningest pitcher earlier this spring and currently boasts 26 career wins. He graduated with a degree in marketing & management and he has a GPA of 3.27. Originally from West Linn, Ore., Kraus has notched six W’s this season, is holding opposing hitters to a .247 batting average and he ranks 32nd nationally with an ERA of 2.04.
This is the first all-academic honor for Thompson, who is a mathematics major with a GPA of 3.62. Thompson, who hails from Gig Harbor, Wash., has 16 hits this season, three doubles, three triples, seven RBI’s and 14 runs scored.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.
