The Portland Pilots will be represented well at Old Trafford in Manchester, England, on Monday as familiar foes the U.S. and Canada will square off in a semifinal match at the 2012 Olympics. Former UP standout Megan Rapinoe will likely start in the midfield for the Americans, while fellow alums Christine Sinclair and Sophie Schmidt should be in Team Canada’s starting XI. Kick-off is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. (Pacific).
Rapinoe, who is making her first career Olympics appearance, has been solid in the midfield for the U.S., scoring a goal and adding three assists during the Americans’ four wins. Her goal against Colombia during group play proved to be the game-winner.
Sinclair has scored three goals for Team Canada and has one assist so far in these her second Olympics. Schmidt is also appearing in her second Olympic Games and has started all four games in the midfield, registering one assist.
The U.S. topped New Zealand in the Quarterfinals, while Canada eliminated host Great Britain. The winner of USA-Canada will face the winner of the other semifinal featuring Japan and France with the gold medal to be determined on Thursday, Aug. 9, at Wembley Stadium in London.
