PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland junior Kari Luttinen scored a season-high 20 points, junior Cassandra Thompson had 11 rebounds and the Pilots cruised past the Columbia Lions 58-42 in a non-conference women's basketball game played on Friday night at the Chiles Center. The Pilots held the Lions to just 11 field goals overall and 21.2 percent shooting.
It's the second straight win for the Pilots, who improve to 4-2 on the year. Columbia drops to 1-5.
Columbia opened the night ice cold from the field and the Pilots took full advantage. About seven minutes into the first half Thompson hit a baseline jumper to give the Pilots a 13-4 lead. The Lions would then pull within three, but UP responded with 14 unanswered points to stretch the lead to double digits. Luttinen had a pair of three-pointers during the run, which helped the Pilots take a 30-16 lead into the locker room at half.
It was more of the same in the second half as the Lions never got closer than eight points, while Portland was able to push the lead to 21 points.
Junior Jasmine Wooton scored 10 points in the second half to finish with 14 overall.
Luttinen scored 10 points during each half and hit four three-pointers on the night. She becomes the fourth Pilot this season to score at least 20 points in a game.
Columbia claimed a slight 41-40 advantage on the glass, despite the efforts of Thompson who had her third game with double digit rebounds this year.
Portland shot 36.4 percent (20-for-55) from the field, connected on five three-pointers and went 13 of 18 at the free throw line. Columbia's 11 field goals came on 52 attempts, the Lions also hit five three's and were 15-for-25 at the foul line.
The Pilots turned 21 Columbia turnovers into 25 points, while the Lions countered with 14 points on 15 UP miscues. Portland claimed a 20-10 advantage in points in the paint and a 10-2 edge in fast break points.
Every player available for the Pilots played in the game.
The Pilots don't return to the court again until next Friday night when they welcome Oregon State to the Chiles Center. Tip-off between the Pilots and Beavers is set for 7 p.m.
