ORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland juniors Cassandra Brown and Kari Luttinen both scored 25 points as the Pilots cruised to a convincing 85-71 win over the Boise State Broncos in a non-conference women's game played on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center. The 25 points are a career-high for Luttinen, who has scored at least 20 points in three straight games.
The win improves Portland's record to 5-3, while Boise State drops to 4-4.
Luttinen was three of four from three-point range and she was a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line. Brown matched Luttinen's six-for-six performance at the line to register her second game with at least 20 points this season.
Both Brown and Luttinen also finished with six rebounds each, while senior guard Alexis Byrd corralled a season-best eight boards to help the Pilots to a 54-40 edge on the glass. Senior forward Amy Pupa also registered eight rebounds to go along with eight points.
The Pilots jumped out to a sizable lead in the first half and were never seriously threatened after that. Leading 17-10 about nine minutes in, the Pilots embarked on a 17-2 run to take control of the game. Pupa converted a three-point play during the run, while Luttinen contributed seven points and capped the outburst with a steal and a break-away lay-up.
The Broncos were able to cut into the deficit a little before the break, but Portland still carried a 44-31 lead into the locker room at the half.
It was more of the same in the second half as the Pilots were able to push the lead up to 24 points twice. Brown hit a lay-up on a nice feed from Byrd that made it a 61-38 game with less than 15 minutes left to play, and Portland's lead would hover around 20 points for the rest of the game.
Byrd finished with six assists, which matches a career-high, and junior guard Jasmine Wooton had five.
Portland's 54 boards were easily a season-high and the Pilots were able to use their size advantage down low to claim a 38-18 edge in points in the paint. UP also had 12 fast-break points to Boise State's zero.
The Pilots shot 37.7 percent (26-for-69) overall, were five of 11 on three-pointers and went a solid 28-for-34 at the free throw line. The Broncos were 20-for-67 (29.9 percent) from the field, hit six of 21 three-point attempts and combined to shoot 25-for-32 on free throws.
Miquelle Askew led the Broncos with 21 points.
The Pilots next take a week off for final exams before returning to the floor next Saturday at Fresno State. Tip-off in Fresno, Calif., is set for 2 p.m.
