SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots men’s and women’s tennis teams are ready for the West Coast Conference Championships, which begin with both teams playing on Wednesday, April 24.
The women’s team enters with an 8-13 overall record after earning the eighth seed in the bracket. The tournament starts with three women’s matches at 9:30 a.m. at the Barnes Tennis Center, with the Pilots and fifth seeded San Francisco Dons set to play on courts 11-13 and 20-22.
A team loaded with underclassmen, the Pilots had four players post double-digit victories during the regular season with true freshman Maja Mladenovic (13) and Anastasia Polyakova (12) leading the charge. Seniors Valeska Hoath (10) and Sabine Fuchs (10) also posted double digit win totals while securing spots on the WCC All-Academic team for the third consecutive year.
Portland nearly knocked off the Dons last weekend, but San Francisco escaped the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center with a 4-3 win.
The men’s team looks to avenge a 4-3 loss against their opponent as well as they take on the sixth seeded Saint Mary’s Gaels. Portland grabbed the number seven seed following strong seasons from senior Jackson Martin (career-high 14 wins) and juniors Ratan Gill (12) and WCC All-Academic Michel Hu Kwo (12).
Junior Justin Guay also posted 10 wins for the Pilots during the regular season.
Portland and the Gaels will be playing on courts 14-19 beginning at approximately 12:30 p.m.
