PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland freshmen Allison Wetherington and Danica Evans each scored a goal as the No. 17 Pilots blanked the Nevada Wolf Pack 2-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game played on Friday night at Merlo Field. Wetherington's goal, which came just one minute into the match, goes into the books as the game-winner as Portland improves to 4-1-1 on the season.
On a free kick shortly after the opening kickoff, Amanda Frisbie went with a quick re-start to Michelle Cruz just inside the left edge of the 18. Cruz took a couple of touches before sending a low ball into the box. Parker got a touch on the pass, re-directing it to Wetherington, who did the rest by burying a shot into the back of the net.
It's the second straight game with a goal for Wetherington.
Evan's goal came just seven minutes later and it was off a rebound of a shot by Micaela Capelle. Capelle, a senior forward, drilled the original shot from near the top of the box, which was knocked down by Nevada goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos. Evans was there to finish with her first career goal to hand the Pilots a 2-0 lead.
It was a lead the Pilots would hold onto as Portland dominated possession and created continuous opportunities during the remainder of the first half and into the second. Capelle rattled the crossbar with a shot from the top of the box in the 71st minute, and freshman Mikayla Elmer had a shot saved in the 74th minute.
Cruz then hit one just wide in the game's closing minutes.
The Pilots held the Wolf Pack (1-3-2) to just three shots on the night, including only one on-goal. Portland combined for 14 shots total and attempted a remarkable 16 corner kicks.
Portland goalkeepers Erin Dees and Nichole Downing combined on the shutout, with Downing making UP's lone save on the night. Quintos countered with three saves for Nevada.
The Pilots return to the Merlo pitch on Sunday afternoon when they host Missouri at 2:30 p.m.
