PORTLAND, Ore. --- Cassandra Brown finished with 18 points and was one of five Pilots to score in double figures as the Pilots upended the No. 24 ranked and previously unbeaten San Diego Toreros 72-51 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Wednesday night at the Chiles Center. It's the first win over a ranked opponent for the Pilots since 2003.
Portland led by seven at the break and was able to stretch the lead to double figures early in the second half. San Diego then scored nine unanswered points to pull within 50-42 with 10:06 to play, but the Pilots answered with back-to-back three-pointers by Brown and a lay-up from Alexis Byrd to push the lead up to 16 points.
After that the Toreros had no answer for the swarming Portland defense and the Pilots cruised to the 21-point victory.
The Pilots improve to 9-6 on the year and even their conference mark to 2-2. It's the first blemish this season for San Diego (15-1, 4-1 WCC), who was ranked for the first time in program history. The loss also ended a program-record 15-game winning streak for the Toreros.
Brown was a perfect four-for-four on three-pointers, shot six of seven overall and hit a pair from the free throw line.
Jasmine Wooton finished with 13 points and six assists, while Byrd, Kari Luttinen and Cassandra Thompson each scored 10 points.
Amy Pupa's 11 rebounds helped Portland claim a decisive 45-33 edge on the glass, and the senior forward also added five assists.
The first half went back-and-forth before the Pilots used 14-1 run to surge ahead. Wooton had six points during the outburst, which was capped by a Pupa steal and a break-away lay-up that gave the Pilots a 27-18 lead with 4:24 left in the opening stanza. The Toreros would then recover a bit and the Pilots took a 31-24 lead into the halftime locker room.
San Diego pulled within five after the break before Brown and the Pilots caught fire from the field. Brown connected on consecutive three-pointers to hand the Pilots a 50-33 lead before San Diego scored nine straight points to climb back within single digits.
But that's when Brown hit another pair from long range to end the USD threat and the Pilots never looked back.
The Pilots held the Toreros to just 29.7 percent (19-for-64) shooting overall, while San Diego hit only two three's and went 11 of 15 from the foul line. Felicia Wijenberg was the only Torero to score in double figures, finishing with a career-high 28 points.
Portland countered with 46.3 percent (25-for-54) shooting, hit six of 13 from behind the three-point arc and was 16 of 21 on free throws.
UP's previous win over a ranked foe was a 76-58 win over No. 20 Oregon on Dec. 6, 2003.
Portland next welcomes the Brigham Young Cougars to the Chiles Center for a 2 p.m. WCC game on Saturday at the Chiles Center.
