HighlightsSAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- Portland's Alyssa Edenstrom scored in the first half and Emily Sippel tallied a goal after the break as the Pilots and San Francisco Dons played to a 2-2 draw in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played at Negoesco Stadium on a cool fall night in the city by the bay. It's the first career goal for Edenstrom, a sophomore center back, and Sippel notches her first goal of the season.
Edenstrom claimed the game's first goal on a Portland (6-8-3, 3-3-1 WCC) corner in the eighth minute. Allison Wetherington whipped a ball towards the center of the box, and Edenstrom got a touch on it to re-direct a shot into the corner of the net.
Portland junior Noelle La Prevotte then nearly made it a two-goal lead when she drilled a shot towards the upper v from about 20 yards out in the 24th minute. USF goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel somehow made an impossible, diving one-handed stop to knock the ball over the cross bar.
And then in the 40th minute, San Francisco (6-9-3, 2-4-1 WCC) evened the score on a corner kick. The Dons went short, and Jessica Nakae sent a nice ball towards the far post, where Sydnie Telson finished with a header to allow USF to enter the locker room at the half tied 1-1.
The Pilots scored early in the second half to claim their second lead of the game. Sophomore Danica Evans beat a San Francisco defender to a ball on the endline before taking a couple of touches towards the right post, pulling Schiffel off her line. Evans then fed a short pass to Sippel, who remained composed and tapped in a shot from about five yards out to give the 2-1 lead to the Pilots.
The lead would hold for about nine minutes before the Dons leveled the score once again. This time Sonja Giraud had possession inside the 18-yard box, dribbled through a pair of defenders and went top shelf with a shot from point-blank range in the 56th minute.
Barely a minute later Evans rattled the crossbar with a shot from 12 yards out, and the game would remain tied 2-2 until the final whistle of regulation.
Portland freshman goalkeeper Taylor Luty made a save during the first overtime and the Pilots pressured the final third in the closing minutes, but a second overtime was needed.
Four minutes into the second and final OT, Sippel dragged a shot wide from 15 yards out, and moments later the senior forward made good contact on a shot, but it was corralled by Schiffel. La Prevotte then hit one wide as the Pilots began to control possession, but the game would end in a draw.
The Pilots next make the short trek south to face WCC foe Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff at Buck Shaw Stadium is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live nationally on ESPNU and WatchESPN.
