Men's Tennis Incoming Recruit Picks up ATP Point in CyprusNICOSIA, Cyprus – Michail Pervolarakis, who will join the Portland men's tennis team for spring semester, picked up an ATP point this week at the ITF Cyprus F1 Pro Futures tournament. Pervolarakis, a native of Cyprus, defeated Ukraine's Danylo Kalienichenko – who is the 957th-ranked player in the world – by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.
A wild card draw to the event, Pervolarakis dropped a narrow match in the second round to Romania's Teodor Craciun – who has been ranked as high as 218th in the world – 6-4, 7-5.
"I am really happy for Mike," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "I know he has been working very hard at home and playing a lot of matches. He got a crack at an ATP point and made the most of it. Most people will tell you that getting that first point is the hardest. It will be nice for him to have that burden off of his back. He has a few more tourneys before joining us this coming January. Beating a player of that level in the world makes us feel even better about the fact that Mike is going to come in and help us right away."
Portland concluded its fall campaign by integrating six newcomers – including five true freshmen – to the 2014-15 roster. The Pilots will open the spring dual season up in Seattle when they face Seattle U. and East Tennessee State on Jan. 24 and Jan. 25, respectively.
