Sportscenter Top 10PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland junior Hugo Rhoads scored a thunderous goal in the first half and freshman goalkeeper Paul Christensen recorded six saves as the Pilots played to a 1-1 draw with the Duquesne Dukes in a non-conference men's soccer game at Merlo Field on Friday afternoon. It's the first goal this season for Rhoads, who is the left back for the Pilots (1-1-3).
After 42 minutes of scoreless soccer, Portland earned a corner kick, which was taken by senior Michael Escobar. Escobar sent a ball towards the top of the box where it took a bounce before Rhoads made perfect contact and hammered a half-volley into the top right corner of the net. The stellar strike from 20 yards out gave the Pilots a 1-0 lead at the half.
Down a goal, the Dukes (3-0-2) increased the pressure in the final third in the second half, but Christensen repeatedly denied the Duquesne shots. First Christensen knocked away a shot that knuckled off the foot of Chris Alescio in the 53rd minute. Then the freshman came off his line to block a shot by Austin Lange in a 1-v-1 situation four minutes later.
Christensen again kept it a 1-0 Portland lead in the 62nd minute when he made a diving stop on another shot from Lange.
But there wasn't much Christensen could do 13 minutes later when 6-foot-7 Duquesne forward Kadeem Pantophlet elevated to knock in a header from the center of the box. The equalizer came on a corner, sent in by Dorian Kouame.
Portland tried to respond, and Escobar forced Duquesne keeper Sam Frymier into making an awkward save with a low bouncing shot in the 86th minute. Rhoads then chested down a ball in the 87th minute before hitting a shot that appeared destined for the right corner of the net. But it was blocked by a defender at the last second and the two sides would head to overtime.
Neither team was able to create many chances in the first overtime, but the second overtime featured a golden chance for the Pilots in the final minute. Brandon Zambrano gained possession, dribbled into the box and cut back towards the top of the six-yard box to create some space. He the hit the possible game winner towards the far post, but a Duquesne defender was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball off the goal line.
Both teams finished with 15 shots on the afternoon, and Frymier made three saves.
The Pilots next face the Siena Saints on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ronaldo Field at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. Both Friday's and Sunday's games are part of Oregon State's Nike Classic.
