BERKELEY, Calif. – Portland junior Michail Pervolarakis dropped a semifinals match to 17th-ranked and top-seeded Andre Goransson of host California Sunday at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships. The Pilots capped the tournament as one of the standout programs, joining Cal as the only teams to have multiple quarterfinalists and Portland was one of four teams to have four or more players advance to the Round of 32.
"I cannot tell you how proud I am of what our team was able to accomplish this week," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "It doesn't always work out that hard work is rewarded, but during this tournament it did for us. Our team almost to a player put in hard work over the summer and have been very focused in fall practices up to this point. And it has showed here in Berkeley."
Pervolarakis, the tournament's No. 13 seed, was the only non-Cal semifinalist. He won four matches, including three against other seeded players, before being topped by a 6-3, 6-2 margin on Sunday.
"Mike's opponent is the real deal," Gross noted. "Mike lost seven no-ad games and missed five or six fairly routine forehands and was still in the match. The whole tournament, including tonight, is encouraging for Mike. Though he lost, there are some obvious things that he can clean up to be able to overcome at this level and there is no question he can get that done. Better players win more no-ad points and force opponents to go closer to the lines, and that's what Goransson did tonight. I think we will go home and make some adjustments and there is a very good chance of Mike consistently playing at this level throughout the rest of his career at Portland."
Pervolarakis knocked off the tournament's No. 8 seed, Jayson Amos of Oregon by a 6-4, 7-5 to reach the semifinals. He previously posted a straight sets win over co-No. 17 seed Bjorn Hoffmann of California and pulled out a three-setter against co-No. 17 seed Miguel Diaz of Pacific. Pervolarakis opened the tournament with a straight set victory over Mert Zincirli of San Francisco.
Fellow junior Mathieu Garcia also completed a breakout weekend that included a come-from-behind victory over No. 59-ranked and second-seeded David Wilczynski of Stanford and had two other wins to join Pervolarakis in the quarterfinals. Garcia's run came to an end against 77th-ranked Filip Bergevi of Cal in three sets.
Portland also had sophomores Felix Fan and Carlos Donat reach the Round of 32 as the Pilots compiled a 13-6 record in the singles draw. See below for complete Portland results at the event.
The Pilots will next be in action at the Bulldog Classic in Spokane, Wash. on Oct. 28-30.
