PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots open the 2016 season with a pair of derbies at Merlo Field before traveling to California for the first road game of the season to close out the month of August. The Pilots, who will play at the friendly confines eight times next fall, officially begin the 2016 campaign at home against the Washington Huskies on Friday, August 19.
The Pilots follow the match with the Huskies by hosting crosstown rival Portland State a week later on Friday, August 26. The game with the Vikings will be part of a double header with the men's team at Merlo Field, and it will be preceded by the always popular Bite on The Bluff.
The Pilots and Huskies have met on the pitch a total of 38 times, with the Pilots winning 27 of those games in a series that dates back to 1982. Washington has reached the postseason five times in the past eight years, and the Huskies have totaled 21 NCAA berths.
That same weekend, the Pilots trek to the Bay Area to battle the California Bears on Sunday, August 28. Cal reached the NCAA tournament last season for the 12th straight year, and the Bears have made 22 total visits to the postseason.
Portland's annual visit to Washington's Husky Classic is scheduled for the following weekend (Sept. 2-4) and will feature games against Seattle U and Cal Poly in Seattle. The annual Nike Portland Invitational is scheduled for Sept. 9-11 at Merlo Field and the Pilots will host Southern Utah and St. John's during the weekend. Portland will first face the Thunderbirds on Friday before taking on the Red Storm on Sunday, and this will be the Pilots' first time playing either team. St. John's has been to the playoffs twice in the past three years.
The following week brings a trip south as the Pilots visit both Corvallis and Eugene to face the Oregon State Beavers and Oregon Ducks. First the Beavers host Portland on Friday, Sept. 16, before the Ducks welcome the Pilots to campus on Monday, Sept. 19. The Pilots have won 28 of 33 previous meetings with the Beavers, while claiming 18 straight wins against the Ducks, most recently in Eugene in 2013.
The Pilots then embark on their final non-conference road trip as they head to Orange County to face the UC Irvine Anteaters on Sunday, Sept. 25.
The West Coast Conference slate begins with two home dates, starting with the Pepperdine Waves on Friday, Sept. 30. The Waves have been to the NCAA tourney three out of the last four years. Portland's next league opponent, Loyola Marymount, reached the Sweet 16 last fall. The Pilots and Lions are set to square off Sunday, Oct. 2.
Next comes a road trip to Spokane to face the Gonzaga Bulldogs under the lights on Saturday, Oct. 8. A week later the Pilots will be in Provo, Utah, to face defending league champion BYU. The UP-BYU match is slated for Saturday, Oct. 15.
The Pilots then conclude the home portion of their WCC slate with games against Pacific and Saint Mary's. The match with the Tigers is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 21, and the Pilots will celebrate senior day against the Gaels, which will take place on Sunday, Oct 23.
Portland then wraps up the regular season with dates at San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Diego. First is the trip to the Bay Area, where the Pilots will take on the Dons on Friday, Oct. 28.
