PORTLAND, Ore. – Jelena Lukic has signed a national letter of intent with the Portland Pilots women's tennis team, head coach Susie Campbell announced on Wednesday. Lukic will be an incoming freshman for the Pilots and was the Serbian Junior National Champion in 2014.
Lukic has been ranked as high as 1113 by the Women's Tennis Association and becomes the sixth player in program history to have earned a WTA ranking. She won the Serbian junior title in 2014 and then helped the Serbia Junior National Team win the 2014 European Championships in France.
"This is a very exciting day for us as Jelena will make an immediate impact at the very top of our lineup," Campbell said. "She is a great player with a very good game and we are very excited that she has chosen University of Portland as the next step in her career."
"We are very excited to have Jelena join the Pilot Tennis Family," Portland assistant coach Filip Zivkovic said. "She is an extremely gifted player who has competed at the highest level and was very successful. Having played for the national team throughout her junior career, Jelena has a lot of experience in a team setting which should ease her transition to college tennis. Jelena is a powerful player who is a prototype of a player that has been successful in our conference, and in college tennis in recent years, and we are sure that she will do some amazing things as a Pilot."
