SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Portland men's tennis junior Michail Pervolarakis defeated No. 2 seed and 48th-ranked Logan Smith of USC in a Round of 16 match Saturday morning to reach the quarterfinals of the Battle of the Bay Classic at the California Tennis Club. Pervolarakis was then knocked out of the draw by Cal Poly's Ben Donovan, the tournament's No. 5 seed.
Pervolarakis, who was unseeded, beat Smith 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to earn his best individual win at the collegiate level.
The Pilots had two players participating in the elite, early-season tournament. Both Mathieu Garcia and Pervolarakis reached the singles Round of 16 as Portland and USC were the only schools to have two players advance that far.
Garcia, who won two matches on Friday, dropped his match on Saturday to USC's Robbie Bellamy, the No. 6 seed, by a 6-2, 6-1 margin.
The Pilot tandem opened Saturday with a hard-fought doubles loss in a tiebreaker.
"Today was another good day for us," said Portland assistant coach Olivier Jamin. "We started with a very close loss in doubles, but played at a high level. It will help us work on a few things and get better as the season continues.
"Mathieu had a tough match in singles and fought hard to try to get back into the match, but his opponent played great. It was a good learning experience for him.
"Mike came up really big in his first singles match of the day, beating a tough opponent ranked No. 48 in the nation. He dug deep after losing the second set and came back and played amazing in the third, leaving no chance to the other player. I was incredibly proud of what he showed today mentally and physically. He came up just a little short during his second match, despite fighting a break back in both sets, but credit to his opponent who was able to come up with big shots on the last few points of the match."
Eleven of the 14 teams with participants in the Battle of the Bay Classic finished last year with team ITA Rankings, including the Pilots at No. 74, while five individuals are nationally ranked in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings.
"At the end of the day we got what we wanted from this first tournament of the year," Jamin said. "We faced some tough competition, notched a couple of great wins, and came away with a few things to work on for the next few weeks."
