Pierre Garcia defeated Andrew Rogers (Tennessee) in straight sets to open the tournament and then pulled out a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory against Stefan Gonzalez of UAB.
Senior Mathieu Garcia also posted a three set comeback win in the Crimson Draw against Alejandro Manzanares of Lipscomb by a 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 margin. He then fell in the quarterfinals to the top-seed and No. 113-ranked Robert Herrera of East Tennessee State.
Senior Alex Wallace battled in a pair of three set losses in the Houndstooth Singles Draw, while Donat lost to the White Draw's No. 2 seed, Frazier Renglifo (East Tennessee State) and then retired in his consolation match.
"The competition and the conditions are very challenging here," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Some of our guys have played on quite a bit of clay growing up, but so have a lot of the other guys here at this tournament. Pierre is continuing to have probably the best fall that he has had as a Pilot. He had two very nice wins today, including coming from a set behind in beating a very experienced player in the quarterfinals. He also teamed with Carlos and advanced in doubles. It is a great format here in that everyone plays again tomorrow and Sunday in both singles and doubles. It's the last event of the fall and we are definitely getting our money's worth."
The tournament continues on Saturday with two more rounds of doubles and one round of singles in the afternoon. The event concludes on Sunday with final singles and doubles matches. No live scoring or video is available, but complete results will be updated following each day's action.
