PORTLAND, Ore. – Coming off of the first West Coast Conference title in Portland men's tennis history, head coach Aaron Gross has added more firepower to next year's roster with the addition of Tom Hann (Perth, Australia). Hann signed with the Pilots this week and will be an incoming freshman on campus this fall.
"We are excited to announce the signing of Tom for the 2017-18 season," said Gross, the reigning WCC Coach of the Year. "Like so many of our current and former players, he comes to us under the radar as far as Junior results go. In the last month he has had some very significant wins that have boosted him into the Top 75 in the Australian rankings. He is very solid off the ground and his serve is improving, but will be a project for him as it is for most 18-year-olds when they come to college and compete against older players.
"Tom is hungry and he is motivated. I think he will fit in great with the current group that we have coming back. We have strong leadership with our older players already so he is not going to be asked to fill that void, but my hope is that he will emerge as that type of leader and continue the great culture that the last couple of graduating classes have helped create."
Portland had a year full of accolades and honors highlighted by the program claiming its first WCC title, junior Michail Pervolarakis earning the school's first WCC Player of the Year award, and Gross earning both league and region Coach of the Year honors. The Pilots (18-3, 8-1 WCC) just missed an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships and finished No. 48 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
Gross will return a majority of the team for next season as just one senior graduated, while nine lineup contributors are back next year.
Hann will join fellow incoming freshman
Drew Davison as newcomers to the Portland roster for the 2017-18 season.
