DAVIS, Calif. – Portland senior Pierre Garcia recorded another impressive three-set win on Saturday to highlight day two of the Aggie Invitational on Saturday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
Garcia, who posted a come-from-behind three set win in Friday's opening round, defeated the No. 5 seed Ruadhan O'Sullivan of Gonzaga in a marathon on Saturday. He won the first set in a tiebreaker, dropped a second set tiebreaker, and then pushed to a 6-3 win in the third to clinch. He moved on to face the top-seeded Bjorn Hoffman of Cal in the quarterfinals. Hoffman was coming off of a walk-over and advanced with a win in straight sets.
"Our young guys had a great day competing, but the highlight of the day was Pierre Garcia," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "He beat Gonzaga's number one player in a three-hour marathon this morning. He had to bounce back shortly after and play the number one seed from Cal, who was fresh after a walkover and was just too good. Pierre was awesome over the last couple of days in winning some tough three set matches against good players."
In the 'B' Draw, freshman Tom Hann dropped a tough Round of 16 match against No. 2 seed Dominic Barretto of Cal, but bounced back with a straight sets victory against Matthew Perkins of Gonzaga.
Freshman Drew Davison dropped a hard-fought three-setter to the No. 6 seed Kamran Khan of Santa Clara by a 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 margin and then again went the distance in consolation play against Jackson Suh of Cal, falling in a super-tiebreaker.
"Tom Hann bounced back from a loss against the number two seed this morning to get another win this afternoon," Gross said. "Drew Davison lost two very close three set battles today against solid players. Andrew Newell has struggled a little bit, but there are glimpses of the player that we know he can be when he gains that belief. We played a lot of tennis today and have a ton of feedback through the results and video that we will take back and go to work on next week. We still have one more great day of opportunities available tomorrow here in Davis."
The tournament concludes on Sunday with consolation singles and doubles action beginning at 8:30 a.m.
