PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No.6 seeded Portland Pilots beach volleyball team will head to Santa Monica this weekend to compete in the West Coast Conference Beach Volleyball Championships. The Pilots are slated to take on No.3 seeded and nationally ranked No.20 Saint Mary's on Friday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m.
"The team has been working hard in the last few weeks of the season in preparation for the WCC Championships, and are excited to face a new test this weekend," said head coach Dylan Hamilton. "The WCC has a number of very skilled teams, and we are anticipating some stiff competition, as well as an opportunity to compete with some of the best beach players in the country".
The Gaels are 14-10 on the season and have played several ranked teams including No.16 Stanford, No.19 Cal, No.5 Long Beach, and No.16 LMU. At the beginning of the season, Saint Mary's defeated Cal 3-2 before the Golden Bears were ranked.
If Portland claims the match against Saint Mary's, the Pilots will then play again in the afternoon against the winners of match 3 (No. 15 LMU vs Santa Clara). If the Pilots don't advance, Portland will then play on Friday afternoon in match 6 against the non-advancing winner of the LMU vs Santa Clara match.
