SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland senior Michail Pervolarakis was named the 2018 West Coast Conference Player of the Year on Wednesday, as voted on by the league's ten head coaches. Pervolarakis takes home the WCC's top individual honor for the second consecutive season.
Pervolarakis became the first Portland men's tennis player to earn WCC Player of the Year honors last season and he now joins a list of five players in WCC history to take home the honor more than once. He joins Sebastian Fanselow (2012-13), Andre Begemann (2007-08), Scott Doerner (2005-06) and Al Garland (2000-02) as the only student-athletes to earn the two-time honor with Pervolarakis becoming the first from a school other than Pepperdine to do so.
The Limassol, Cyprus native is also the first Pilot in history with three All-WCC First Team singles honors. He earned honorable mention accolades as a freshman before landing on the first team each of the last three seasons.
Pervolarakis twice took home WCC Player of the Week honors this spring (Feb. 6, Apr. 17) and finished the regular season with a 12-1 dual mark and 6-0 record against WCC opponents at the top of the lineup. He has posted a 24-5 overall singles record with four wins against ranked opponents. Pervolarakis also became the first Pilot to win the ITA Northwest Regional title.
He enters this week's WCC Championships in the driver's seat to claim an automatic bid to the NCAA Singles Championships. Pervolarakis is the WCC's top ranked player in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings at No. 56, while San Diego freshman August Holmgren (No. 75) is the only other ranked player in the WCC.
Portland senior Mathieu Garcia earned All-WCC second team singles honors for the second year in a row. Garcia posted an impressive 11-4 dual mark primarily at the No. 2 position, including 6-1 record in league play.
The Pilot doubles teams of Pervolarakis and freshman Tom Hann, as well as Mathieu Garcia and Pierre Garcia, each earned honorable mention recognition. Pervolarakis and Hann combined for a 5-2 dual doubles record, while the Garcia brothers finished the spring 9-5.
The Pilots travel to Claremont, Calif. today in preparation for the 2018 WCC Championships at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Portland is the No. 4 seed and faces No. 5 Santa Clara in Thursday's first round at 10 a.m. The tournament champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Championships. Visit
