PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Beau Brundage had a big day at the plate going 4-for-4 with three RBI's to help lead the Pilots to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the San Diego Toreros in the finale of a three-game West Coast Conference series played at a sun-drenched Joe Etzel Field on Sunday afternoon. Brundage had a triple and two doubles during the win, and Connor Knutson pitched a flawless 2.0 innings of relief to earn his seventh save.
Â
Brundage's biggest hit of the day came in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Pilots trailing 3-2. After Matt Kelly and Henry Cheney both singled, Brundage sent a shot down the right-field line into the corner for a double. Kelly easily scored on the extra-base hit, and Cheney came all the way around from first base with the go-ahead run.
Â
Knutson then took over in the mound in the top of the eighth and retired the Toreros in order. In the ninth, Knutson got the first two batters, which included a strike out of Connor Doyle who had worked it to a full count. San Diego then stayed alive briefly on a Portland error, but Knutson sealed it with a game-ending ground out off the bat of Shane McGuire.
Â
The Pilots (20-29, 10-14 WCC) collect their 20th win of the season, which is something the program hadn't accomplished since 2012 when Portland claimed 27 victories. The 10 conference wins are also the most for the Pilots since that same year (12).
Â
The Toreros (23-30, 12-15 WCC) scored a run during each the first and second innings to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Despite the early deficit, Portland starter Camden Muller did well to limit San Diego's opportunities, keeping the Pilots within reach.
Â
Muller worked into the fifth inning, allowing just those two early runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Â
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Brundage provided the first of his clutch hits when he tripled to right field. The ball just missed leaving the yard as it hit the top of the fence, and Kelly, who had previously doubled, scored to cut the deficit in half.
Â
Cody Hawken then stepped up to the plate and lined a hard-hit single to left field that brought home Brundage and leveled the score 2-2.
Â
The tie was short-lived, however, as Adam Kerner belted a two-out, solo home run to left field that handed the lead back to the Toreros. The game would remain 3-2 until the seventh when the Pilots rallied for the win.
Â
Three relievers followed Muller on the hill, including Tate Budnick (4-1) who picked up the win. Budnick entered the game to begin the top of the seventh inning with Portland down a run. The first two hitters he faced reached base, but the senior recovered to escape the jam with a pair of strike outs and a fly out.
Â
Nate Kuchta started the game on the mound for the Toreros, and reliever Anthony Donatella (2-5) takes the loss after pitching the final 3.0 innings.
Â
Portland out-hit the Toreros 11-9, and Jace McKinney joined Kelly and Brundage in registering more than one hit.
Â
Sunday was Portland's final home game of the year, and the Pilots celebrated Senior Day by honoring Budnick, Muller, Jake Hawken, Ryan Hoogerwerf, Jordan Horak, Corbin Powers, Nick Shur, and Justin Thaxton with a pre-game ceremony.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a trip up I-5 for a non-conference game with the Washington Huskies in Seattle on Tuesday. First pitch at Husky Ballpark is set for 6:05 p.m.
