MALIBU, Calif. --- Ryan Hoogerwerf tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning and Tate Budnick won it when he left the yard with a homer in the top of the 10th as the Pilots opened their final West Coast Conference series with a thrilling 2-1 win over the first-place Pepperdine Waves on Friday afternoon. Reliever Connor Knutson had another solid outing for the Pilots, this time tossing 3.0 scoreless innings to collect the win at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Â
Knutson (4-2) combined with starter Eli Morse and reliever Christian Peters to hold the Waves (28-21, 16-9 WCC) to just the one run on seven hits. Knutson yielded only one hit during his 3.0 scoreless innings of work, and he struck out one as he continues his stellar sophomore campaign.
Â
Meanwhile Hoogerwerf and Budnick provided all the offense the Pilots (22-28, 11-14 WCC) would need. Hoogerwerf's blast, his second home run in as many games, came with Portland trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning. The senior led off the frame with his fifth homer of the season, which knotted the score 1-1.
Â
Both teams had their chances from there, but when Budnick stepped to the plate with two outs in the top of the 10th inning, the score was still level 1-1. The senior then turned on a pitch and crushed his fourth homer of the year well over the left field fence.
Â
The Waves did get a runner on base in the bottom of the 10th, but he'd be left stranded as Knutson registers his fourth win of the year, to go along with his nine saves.
Â
Morse, a freshman, went 5.0 innings during the win, and Peters was nearly flawless in 2.0 scoreless innings, surrendering just a pair of walks.
Â
Pepperdine starter Cooper Chandler allowed the Hoogerwerf homer, but he was otherwise effective in 6.0 innings of work. Reliever Kiko Garcia (0-2) takes the loss after giving up Budnick's big fly, and Michael Mahony retired the only batter he faced to end the top of the 10th.
Â
The Pilots have already won more games since the 2012 season, and their 11 conference victories are also the most since that same year when they won 12 league contests.
Â
The Pilots and Waves next play the second game of the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
