SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- After 8.0 scoreless innings and the first two UC Santa Barbara batters were retired in the bottom of the ninth, the Gauchos rallied with three consecutive singles to claim a walk-off, 1-0 win over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played on Monday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The game was the final of the season for the Pilots, who were coming off a WCC series win at Pepperdine.
Â
Portland starter Kevin Baker, who was making just his third appearance of the season as he works his way back from an injury, was flawless on the hill during the 5.0 innings of work. He yielded just two hits, didn't issue a walk, and struck out seven.
Â
UCSB's (25-27-1) Luke Andrews matched Baker pitch-for-pitch, as he also allowed only two hits in 6.1 innings. The righty fanned eight before giving way to reliever Josh Candau (3-1), who tossed the final 2.1 innings and gets the win.
Â
Portland relievers Jordan Horak, Jake Hawken, and Nick Shur were all solid on the mound, and Shur struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth as he looked to preserve the scoreless tie and get the game to extra innings. But Tevin Mitchell reached on a two-out, infield single, stole second, moved to third on another infield single, and scored when pinch hitter Eric Yang found a hole in the right side of the infield for the game-winning hit and RBI.
Â
Shur (0-2) is saddled with the hard-luck loss as the Pilots finished with only three hits, which came a day after they collected 15 hits during a win at Pepperdine. Beau Brundage, Ryan Hoogerwerf, and Chad Stevens accounted for Portland's three hits, which were all singles.
Â
Portland finishes the season with a 23-30 overall record, which is a 13-win improvement from a year a ago. The 23 wins are also the most for the Pilots since producing 27 victories in 2012, and Portland's 12 wins in the WCC are also the most since that 2012 season. The Pilots tied for sixth place in the conference and just missed qualifying for the four-team WCC Championships.
